L. Florence Atkinson (Flo)
Lillie Florence (Flo) Atkinson, 83 years old, lived in Miami OK for the past 62 years passed into eternal rest June 4, 2012 at home in Miami, OK. Flo was born May 2, 1929 in Joplin, Mo to Bill and Cecil Holden. She married Charles Atkinson on June 16, 1946 at Columbus KS and he preceded her in death in 1994. She was known by many names, Mom, Gma Flo, Aunt Flo, Miss Flo, and Nurse Flo, she spent the first half of her life taking care of her family, and all their friends. She decided to return to school at the age of 40 and became a Registered Nurse graduating from MSSC in Joplin in 1970. Flo work as an RN at Bradshaw Hospital, Afton Memorial Hospital and was a consultant to several area nursing homes. She spent the last 22 yrs at NEO as the school nurse, retiring on her 82nd birthday. Many people knew her for her cakes and pies around town. She also did sewing for many people, and loved teaching girls to sew and make quilts. She never met a stranger. She opened her heart and home to 15 Foster Children. Flo was a member of NEO Women and WMU’s and an active member of Eastside Assembly of God. Flo is survived by her children, Karen Yoxall, Miami OK, Jack Atkinson and wife Nancy Edmond OK, and Darrell Atkinson and wife Shirley Lawton OK., Five Grandchildren, Darin Atkinson, Miami OK, Greg Atkinson, Wyandotte OK, Jennifer Holland, CA., Angela Charlton, Seneca MO., and Lori Atkinson, FL. Blessed with twelve great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren and the15 foster children who was raised in her home. One brother Chester Holden, Webb City MO, three sisters, Evelyn Snider, Pittsburg KS, Dorothy Crowder, Joplin MO, and Marilyn West, Carl Junction MO. Flo was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brothers, Joe, Bob, Delmer and Virgil Holden. and great grandson Jonathan Atkinson. Funeral services under the personal direction of Campbell-Biddlecome Funeral Home, Seneca will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, June 9.2012 at the Eastside Assembly of God church with Gary Rhodes officiating. Burial will be in the Carl Junction Cemetery with Grandsons serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 PM, Friday, June 8, 2012 at the Eastside Assembly of God Church.
